Understanding high blood pressure

As your heart pumps, blood pressure is created by the force of blood against the walls of the arteries and the force of the arteries resisting blood flow. If these forces are too great, it's called high blood pressure or hypertension.

Many people with high blood pressure aren't even aware of it because they don't have any symptoms. So it's important that your doctor checks your blood pressure every time you visit. Always ask your doctor what your numbers are and establish a blood pressure goal that's best for you.

You know you have high blood pressure.
What you might not know is how serious it is. If your blood pressure is consistently 140/90 mm Hg or higher, you may be at risk of serious health consequences.

You can manage high blood pressure, but you should understand what blood pressure is, and how it affects you. Knowing your numbers is your only warning.

Diovan and Diovan HCT are approved to treat high blood pressure, and are not approved to prevent heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, or eye damage resulting from high blood pressure.

Understanding Normal And High Blood Pressure Readings

Normal blood pressure readings for most adults are less than 120/80 mm Hg. If your blood pressure is consistently 140/90 mm Hg or higher, you have high blood pressure and may be at risk for serious medical conditions, such as heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, stroke, and vision problems. Diovan and Diovan HCT are approved to treat high blood pressure, and are not approved to prevent heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, stroke, and vision problems resulting from high blood pressure.

Monitoring Normal and High Blood Pressure Numbers

Keeping track of your blood pressure numbers is extremely important. Blood pressure levels can vary over time and in different situations. So you should check your blood pressure numbers regularly, even monitoring them at home. However, the first thing to do is visit your doctor to check your blood pressure numbers and to determine a blood pressure goal that is right for you.

If your blood pressure numbers are consistently 140/90 mm Hg or higher, you may have high blood pressure. And if diet and lifestyle changes are not enough, your doctor may discuss a high blood pressure medication like Diovan or Diovan HCT.
